When you visit MxRP for the first time, you will need to create an account. To do so, you will have to choose a username and password. Usernames and passwords can only consist of letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens.
You will be prompted to create a security question and an answer. If you ever forget your password, you can enter your username to retrieve your security question, which will be used to verify that you are the owner of your account.
Once you have filled out all of the required information, you will be required to verify your account via email. After verifying your email, you will be able to access the site and begin roleplaying. If you have any trouble with signing up, please send in a "System Error" ticket here.
If you've forgotten your password, or if you'd like to change it, please visit this page. You will be prompted to enter your username, and then to answer your security question before you can create a new password. If you are unable to reset your password for any reason, please send in a ticket here.
You can use this function to create or find a Group Chat. There are a set of filters to help you select a chat that is appropriate to your desires. These filters allow you to browse through different ratings (SFW, NSFW, or NSFW(E)). You can also choose whether or not you would like a chat that uses Script or Paragraph style.
If you are unfamiliar with Styles and Ratings, please refer to the "Terminology" section of this guide. Your filter options will automatically be saved to your account and will still be in place whenever you return to this page.
The Random Encounter page is the traditional "Character Search" found on the original MxRP. This form of roleplaying allows you to search for specific character(s) to interact with.
When using this page, please select your character from the dropdown found at the top of the page, marked as "Roleplay as". Though you are able to set your quirk and chumhandle manually, we ask that you use this dropdown to select your character or category (Example: Fankid) so that when others are searching for Fankids, they will run into you. You can edit your quirk on the page, choose from one of your Custom Characters, or leave the quirk on its automatic settings.
If you select the wrong character for yourself, you will show up in the searches as the character selected, rather than the character whose chumhandle you've entered, so keep this in mind when choosing your character! After selecting your character, please select which characters you would (and wouldn't) like to run into, by using the Filters. Your search information will save to your account automatically, so you do not have to worry about losing your quirk and search information. When you are ready to roleplay, click the button that says "==> Enter" and you will be matched to another roleplayer.
To private message another user, you can request their username by clicking on their name in the userlist and selecting the "Request Username". If they accept your request, you will be able to use this username to contact them privately. To do this, take their username and enter type it at the end of this url: "http://beta.msparp.com/pm/" For example, if their account name was "Testaccount1", it would look like this: http://beta.msparp.com/pm/Testaccount1. You will automatically be subscribed to private messages, but you can unsubscribe from them at any time.
This page allows you to create and save your own custom characters to your account. You can make as many custom characters as you'd like, simply by selecting the "Create a New Character" button. When you visit the Character Creation page, you will be prompted to fill out a name and quirk, and you will be required to choose a shortcut. If you are unfamiliar with quirk settings, please check the "Character Customization" section of this guide. Once you've made your character, you can choose to set it as your default character or create another one. When you choose a character as your default, it will be the character you appear as when you enter group chats.
Shortcuts allow you to access that character's quirk and settings, without changing your character in the chat. This is so you can roleplay as multiple characters at once, without having to utilize multiple browsers. To use a shortcut, you must begin your message with /yourshortcuthere. For example, if you had saved a custom version of Gamzee to your account, with the shortcut "gam", you could access this character by typing "/gam" before your message. The color, quirk, and acronym of your saved character will automatically affect your message.
However, please be mindful that you will need to refresh your chat page in order to access new shortcuts and characters.
The "Your Chats" page can be accessed by clicking your account name, which is located in the righthand corner of your screen, or by clicking the "Menu" dropdown (mobile). When entering a chat, you have the option in your "Settings" to subscribe to it, so that you can receive alerts when you have unread messages in the chat, or just so that you do not forget the url. Unread chats with be denoted with an italic name. When you have an unread chat in your chatlist, a notification will appear next to your account name on the site's homepage. If you unsubscribe to a chat, you will no longer receive alerts of the chat's activity and it will be removed from your chatlist. This page has a set of filters so that you can search for a specific type of chat (PM, Group, Roulette, etc), or so that you only see the chats that have unread messages.
You can assign a "Handle" or "Name", along with an "Acronym", to your character with the two boxes directly below the list of preset characters. Acronyms are limited to 15 characters, while names are limited to 50.
The "Replacement" section is for customizing your own typing quirks. For example, instead of manually changing every "w" into "ww", you can input "w" into the left hand side of the replacement box and "ww" into the right hand side, for an automatic quirk. It should look something like this: [ w ] to [ ww ].
Regex replacements can be used to make more intricate and stable quirks. If you are unfamiliar with regex, this guide will explain some of the basics.
The "Prefix" box allows you to insert a symbol, face, etc, before every message, without having to type it each time. Likewise, the "Suffix" box does the same thing, except it shows up at the end of each of your messages. Please remember to put a space at the end of your prefix/suffix if you would like a space between it and your message.
The "Case" dropdown will bring you to a list of automated typing quirks, such as "CAPS" or "AlTeRnAtInG", for you to choose from. The "Normal" typing case will leave your text unaffected by any case quirk, meaning that your message will show up with the capitalization you type it with, so choose this option if you would like to roleplay without a fixed case.
To remove your quirk for a single message, add a / to the beginning of your message, which will remove your typing quirk without you having to change your settings. Quirks will automatically be removed if you start your message with an OOC bracket that looks like (( or [[ (See Terminology for OOC). Your quirk will also remove itself if you send a link. Please keep in mind that this will only work if the link is the first thing you send in your message.
To create a group chat, you will need to visit this page. At the top of the page, there is an input box labeled as "URL", where you can enter a custom url for your group chat. For example, if you wanted a chat named "penguin", you would input "penguin" into the URL box. This would create Chat URLs can only contain letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores. If the URL you desire has been taken by another user, you will have to alter your url to one that is not taken.
There are four tiers of moderators available in group chats. All mod levels are able to change the Rating/Publicity of the group, as well as edit the topic/description and enable autosilence. A chat topic can be up to 500 characters, while the rules and descriptions allow you to insert up to 5,000 characters. You can access the chat's topic by clicking the topic bar at the top of the page, where there will be the option to edit it, as well. However, some abilities are specific to a mod's rank in the chat. Here is a list of each modtier and what each one does:
AGS: The lowest tier is "Amateur Gavel-Slinger", which allows a user to silence other users who are below their mod-level.
BR: "Bum’s Rusher" is the tier above AGS, which has the ability to kick, which temporarily removes a user from the room, or silence users below their mod-level.
PWB: "Professional Wet Blanket" is the second highest tier, which can silence, kick or ban users in their tier or below. PWBs can also remove bans by visiting the "Full User List", which is located below the regular user list on the page. When a chat is listed as private, only PWBs and CCs can invite users to the chat.
CC: The final and highest tier is the "Chat Creator". A chat creator has all of the abilities of a PWB, but they cannot be unmodded or banned from the chat.
Mods can change who can access the chat by altering the chat's "Listing" state. If a group chat is public, it will appear on the "Groups" page, along with the chat's topic. If you would like to create a group chat that is only available to a select group of users, you can choose to make a "Private" chat. When a chat is private, a dropdown will appear above the userlist, giving you the option to invite users to the chat. However, only PWBs and CCs can invite users to a private chat. If a chat is unlisted, anyone can access the chat if they have the URL, so be sure to set a chat to private if you do not want uninvited guests.
The search filters (also known as the checkboxes) are tools that can be used to your disposal when you search for a roleplaying partner. These allow you to decide which characters you do (or don't) run into, along with what Style and Rating you would like your roleplay to be. You cannot search for specific characters on the Roulette page or the Group Chat page, but the Group Chat page allows you to select what Rating and Style you would like to use.
To begin customizing your search on the Character search page, click the dropdown labeled as "Search For". You can "Search for" or "Exclude" certain characters, by clicking the check-box marked: "Look for specific characters". To search for a certain character, click the check-box next to the character’s name. To exclude a character, be sure that their box is not checked, before you begin searching. Also, please remember to place your roleplay under the appropriate Rating and Style categories.
Please make use of these filters, because no one likes being disconnected on before the roleplay even begins.
All chat catagories must obey the site rules.
SFW: Safe For Work material includes light roleplays that do not have any sort of adult content. This section is free of abusive or disconcerting language that may offend those of the more sensitive nature. If there is violence, it should be kept to a minimum and should have little blood drawn. This section is ideal for those who are roleplaying non-concupiscent ships, such as a pale or ashen quadrants. Romance would go no farther than a few light kisses and touches. If you desire a roleplay that can turn to NSFW if your partner chooses, it can go under the SFW tag, unless your modifier/opening prompt has NSFW content.
NSFW: Anything with slight violence, gore, light/fluffy smut, crude language, or drugs belongs in this section. This section is for you if you enjoy loving, consensual sex of your ship or a playful kismesitude. If you are not sure if your roleplay is EXTREME NSFW or REGULAR NSFW, please read below.
NSFW Violent: This section is for when a chat is not safe for work, but only due to violence sexual roleplay is not allowed in this section.
NSFW Extreme: If you have the feeling that your roleplay might belong in the EXTREME NSFW section, then it probably does. This section holds gore, non-consensual sex, character death, any form of torture, kinks that may disturb those of lighter heart, drug abuse, spouse/loved one abuse, extreme violence, things that within reason and within the allowed content on the site that could offend someone. This section does not permit using any situation that breach the terms of service of the site. Use logical judgement with deciding what tag your roleplay belongs under and do not be offended if someone on the NSFW tag asks you to move to the NSFW Extreme tag.
IC and OOC are abbreviations for the terms "In character" and "Out of Character". Anything that is not part of the roleplay (IC chatting) is OOC chatting. Generally, OOC chatting is denoted by a pair of brackets enclosing the text, ((like this)). Many group chats will have rooms made specifically for OOC chatting. OOC specific chats do not require brackets, because there is no need for differentiation between IC and OOC chatting.
Here's a list of shortcuts you can use and what each one does:
/topic: If you place /topic in front of your message, the chat topic will automatically append your text.
/me: Placing /me before your message will cause your message to be sent as an action. For example, if you were roleplaying as Cronus and wanted to do an action, you could place /me before your message and it would become formated like this: * Cronus does an action. *
/charactershortcut If you send a message with one of the "Character Shortcuts" from the creation page, your message will automatically switch to the quirk and text color of the character, but only for that message.
/: Just an ordinary slash can be used to remove your quirk when you send a message.
Desktop notifications are message alerts that appear on your screen, regardless of what tab or program you are on. Use this option if you would like to multitask and not worry about missing your partner's response. You can find this option under the "Settings" button on your chat page.
Typing notifications will appear at the bottom of the chat whenever another user is typing. To enable Typing Notifications, click the "Settings" button located on the bottom of the chat page.
